Picking the Right Workout Clothes

What’s So Important About the Right Workout Clothes?

If you’ve been to the gym recently, you’ve probably seen people working out in all different types of ensembles. From baggy t-shirts, to no shirts at all, and from long gym shorts to sports bras, and everything in between. Then, there are those who wear workout-specific gear. The wardrobes of local gyms are vastly different from person to person. Perhaps you don’t put a lot of thought into what you wear when you hit the gym, or take a jog around the neighborhood, but it’s more important than you might think – especially for women.

Make Working Out Comfortable

We don’t often associate working out with a lot of comfort. While it’s important to push yourself through your exercising, that doesn’t mean your clothes need to be uncomfortable. Clothes that are too tight, or too baggy, are going to end up hindering your performance and your effort. Why? Because you’re spending more time focusing on that discomfort than you are what you’re supposed to be doing.

Clothing that is too tight can create breathing problems, while clothing that is too baggy can become a distraction. If you’re really working hard, you might even find that the material of your clothing can be a problem. Gym clothes should be able to handle sweat by wicking it away, not soaking it up and allowing you to overheat and feel ‘heavy.’

Safety First

Clothing isn’t often considered a safety hazard by most people, but it absolutely can be if you don’t have the right wardrobe for the type of workouts you’re doing. You wouldn’t want to go running without the right kind of shoes, right? You’d run the risk of hurting your feet, twisting an ankle, etc. In addition, clothing could get caught in gym machines, cause you to trip, or again, have the wrong material that will cause you to overheat.

Clothes That Work For You

Clothes you work out in should provide a sense of confidence and purpose. It’s not enough to throw on an old t-shirt and get to work. Of course, if that’s your starting point, it’s better than not working out at all. Eventually, however, it’s important to invest in some solid workout gear that allows you to be flexible, that works with you, and for you, as you try to achieve your fitness goals. Your workout clothes should complement what you’re trying to do, not work against you or make things inconvenient. While you should feel comfortable and confident in your clothes, they shouldn’t be what you’re thinking about as you’re exercising.

When you find the right clothes to work out in, you’ll know it – from the fit, to the breath-ability, and everything in between. Don’t be afraid to try out a few different options before you settle on your perfect fit and style. Once you do, you’ll love working out that much more, exercising will be your main focus, and you’ll feel more confident every step of the way.
